Opening Sentence
Therefore stay awake—for you do not know when the master of the house will come, in the evening, or at midnight, or when the rooster crows, or in the morning—lest he come suddenly and find you asleep.
MARK 13:35-36
Confession of Sin
The Officiant says to the People
Let us humbly confess our sins to Almighty God.
Dearly beloved, the Scriptures teach us to acknowledge our many sins and offenses, not concealing them from our heavenly Father, but confessing them with humble and obedient hearts that we may obtain forgiveness by his infinite goodness and mercy. We ought at all times humbly to acknowledge our sins before Almighty God, but especially when we come together in his presence to give thanks for the great benefits we have received at his hands, to declare his most worthy praise, to hear his holy Word, and to ask, for ourselves and on behalf of others, those things which are necessary for our life and our salvation. Therefore, draw near with me to the throne of heavenly grace.
Let us humbly confess our sins to Almighty God.
Silence is kept. All kneeling, the Officiant and People say
Almighty and most merciful Father,
we have erred and strayed from your ways like lost sheep.
We have followed too much the devices and desires
of our own hearts.
We have offended against your holy laws.
We have left undone those things which we ought to have done,
and we have done those things which we ought not
to have done;
and apart from your grace, there is no health in us.
O Lord, have mercy upon us.
Spare all those who confess their faults.
Restore all those who are penitent, according to your promises
declared to all people in Christ Jesus our Lord.
And grant, O most merciful Father, for his sake,
that we may now live a godly, righteous, and sober life,
to the glory of your holy Name. Amen.
A Deacon or layperson remains kneeling and prays
Grant to your faithful people, merciful Lord, pardon and peace; that we may be cleansed from all our sins, and serve you with a quiet mind; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
The Priest alone stands and says
The Almighty and merciful Lord grant you absolution and remission of all your sins, true repentance, amendment of life, and the grace and consolation of his Holy Spirit.Amen.
Almighty God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, desires not the death of sinners, but that they may turn from their wickedness and live. He has empowered and commanded his ministers to pronounce to his people, being penitent, the absolution and remission of their sins. He pardons and absolves all who truly repent and genuinely believe his holy Gospel. For this reason, we beseech him to grant us true repentance and his Holy Spirit, that our present deeds may please him, the rest of our lives may be pure and holy, and that at the last we may come to his eternal joy; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
The Almighty and merciful Lord grant you absolution and remission of all your sins, true repentance, amendment of life, and the grace and consolation of his Holy Spirit. Amen.

PHOS HILARON
O Gladsome Light
O gladsome light,
pure brightness of the everliving Father in heaven,*
O Jesus Christ, holy and blessed!
Now as we come to the setting of the sun,
and our eyes behold the vesper light,*
we sing your praises, O God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. You are worthy at all times to be praised by happy voices,*
O Son of God, O Giver of Life, and to be glorified through all the worlds. 1 I will cry unto God with my voice;* even unto God will I cry with my voice, and he shall hearken unto me. 2 In the time of my trouble I sought the Lord;* my hands were stretched out in the night without rest; my soul refused comfort. 3 When I think upon God, I groan;* when I ponder, my spirit grows faint. 4 You hold my eyelids open;* I am so troubled that I cannot speak. 5 I consider the days of old;* I call to remembrance the years that are past. 6 In the night I commune with my own heart;* I meditate and search my spirit. 7 Will the Lord cast me off for ever,* and will he no more show his favor? 8 Is his mercy gone for ever,* and has his promise come utterly to an end for evermore? 9 Has God forgotten to be gracious,* and will he withhold his loving-kindness in displeasure? 10 And I said, "Has his right hand become weak?* Has the hand of the Most High lost its strength?" 11 I will remember the works of the Lord,* and call to mind your wonders of old time. 12 I will think also of all your works,* and my talk shall be of your deeds. 13 Your way, O God, is holy;* who is so great a God as our God? 14 You are the God who does wonders,* and have declared your power among the peoples. 15 You have mightily delivered your people,* even the sons of Jacob and Joseph. 16 The waters saw you, O God; the waters saw you and were afraid;* the depths also were troubled. 17 The clouds poured out water, the skies thundered,* and your arrows flashed on every side. 18 The voice of your thunder was heard in the whirlwind; the lightning lit up the world;* the earth was moved and shook. 19 Your way was in the sea, and your paths in the great waters,* yet your footsteps were not seen. 20 You led your people like sheep* by the hand of Moses and Aaron. 1 O give thanks unto the Lord, for he is gracious,* for his mercy endures for ever. 2 O give thanks unto the God of all gods,* for his mercy endures for ever. 3 O give thanks unto the Lord of all lords,* for his mercy endures for ever. 4 Who alone does great wonders,* for his mercy endures for ever. 5 Who by his excellent wisdom made the heavens,* for his mercy endures for ever. 6 Who laid out the earth above the waters,* for his mercy endures for ever. 7 Who made the great lights,* for his mercy endures for ever; 8 The sun to rule the day,* for his mercy endures for ever; 9 The moon and the stars to govern the night,* for his mercy endures for ever. 10 Who struck down the firstborn of Egypt,* for his mercy endures for ever; 11 And brought out Israel from among them,* for his mercy endures for ever; 12 With a mighty hand and an outstretched arm,* for his mercy endures for ever. 13 Who divided the Red Sea in two parts,* for his mercy endures for ever; 14 And made Israel to pass through the midst of it,* for his mercy endures for ever; 15 But as for Pharaoh and his host, he overthrew them in the Red Sea,* for his mercy endures for ever. 16 Who led his people through the wilderness,* for his mercy endures for ever. 17 Who smote great kings,* for his mercy endures for ever; 18 And slew mighty kings,* for his mercy endures for ever; 19 Sihon king of the Amorites,* for his mercy endures for ever; 20 And Og the king of Bashan,* for his mercy endures for ever; 21 And gave away their land for an inheritance,* for his mercy endures for ever; 22 Even for an inheritance for Israel his servant,* for his mercy endures for ever. 23 Who remembered us when we were in trouble,* for his mercy endures for ever; 24 And delivered us from our enemies,* for his mercy endures for ever. 25 Who gives food to all flesh,* for his mercy endures for ever. 26 O give thanks unto the God of heaven,* for his mercy endures for ever. 27 O give thanks unto the Lord of lords* for his mercy endures for ever. 1 By the waters of Babylon we sat down and wept,* when we remembered you, O Zion. 2 As for our harps, we hung them up* upon the trees that are therein. 3 For those who led us away captive required of us a song and melody in our heaviness:* "Sing us one of the songs of Zion." 4 How shall we sing the Lord's song* in the land of our captivity? 5 If I forget you, O Jerusalem,* let my right hand forget its skill. 6 If I do not remember you, let my tongue cleave to the roof of my mouth,* if I prefer not Jerusalem above my dearest joy. 7 Remember the children of Edom, O Lord, in the day of Jerusalem,* how they said, "Down with it, down with it, even to the ground." 8 O daughter of Babylon, wasted with misery,* happy shall be the one who rewards you as you have done to us. 9 Blessed shall he be who takes your children* and throws them against the stones. 1 I will give thanks to you, O Lord, with my whole heart;* even before the gods will I sing praises to you. 2 I will worship toward your holy temple and praise your Name, because of your loving-kindness and truth,* for you have magnified your Name and your word above all things. 3 When I called upon you, you heard me* and gave me increase of strength. 4 All the kings of the earth shall praise you, O Lord,* for they have heard the words of your mouth. 5 They shall sing of the ways of the Lord,* that great is the glory of the Lord. 6 For though the Lord be high, yet he has respect for the lowly;* as for the proud, he beholds them from afar. 7 Though I walk in the midst of trouble, yet shall you refresh me;* you shall stretch forth your hand upon the furiousness of my enemies, and your right hand shall save me. 8 The Lord shall make good his loving-kindness toward me;* your mercy, O Lord, endures for ever; despise not the works of your own hands. 1 The Lord, even the most mighty God, has spoken* and called the world, from the rising of the sun to the going down thereof. 2 Out of Zion, perfect in her beauty,* has God shone forth in glory. 3 Our God shall come and shall not keep silence;* there shall go before him a consuming fire, and a mighty tempest shall be stirred up round about him. 4 He shall call to the heavens above,* and to the earth beneath, that he may judge his people: 5 "Gather my faithful together unto me,* those who have made a covenant with me by sacrifice." 6 And the heavens shall declare his righteousness,* for God himself is Judge. 7 "Hear, O my people, and I will speak;* I myself will testify against you, O Israel, for I am God, even your God. 8 I will not rebuke you because of your sacrifices, or for your burnt offerings,* because they are always before me. 9 I will take no bull calf out of your house,* nor he-goat out of your folds. 10 For all the beasts of the forest are mine,* and so are the cattle upon a thousand hills. 11 I know all the birds of the air,* and the wild beasts of the field are in my sight. 12 If I were hungry, I would not tell you,* for the whole world is mine, and all that is therein. 13 Do you think that I will eat the flesh of bulls* and drink the blood of goats? 14 Offer unto God a sacrifice of thanksgiving,* and pay your vows unto the Most High, 15 And call upon me in the time of trouble;* so will I hear you, and you shall praise me." 16 But to the ungodly God says:* "Why do you recite my laws, and take my covenant in your mouth, 17 Though you hate to be disciplined,* and have cast my words behind you? 18 When you saw a thief, you agreed with him,* and you have taken part with adulterers. 19 You have let your mouth speak wickedness,* and with your tongue you have set forth deceit. 20 You sat and spoke against your brother;* yes, and have slandered your own mother's son. 21 These things you have done, and I held my tongue,* and you thought wickedly that I am such a one as yourself. 22 But I will reprove you,* and set before you the things that you have done. 23 O consider this, you who forget God,* lest I tear you in pieces, and there be none to deliver you. 24 Whoever offers me a sacrifice of thanksgiving honors me,* and to him who orders his way aright will I show the salvation of God." Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit; * as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. The lesson is read, the people sitting Soon afterward he went on through cities and villages, proclaiming and bringing the good news of the kingdom of God. And the twelve were with him,2 and also some women who had been healed of evil spirits and infirmities: Mary, called Magdalene, from whom seven demons had gone out, 3 and Joanna, the wife of Chuza, Herod's household manager, and Susanna, and many others, who provided for them out of their means. 4 And when a great crowd was gathering and people from town after town came to him, he said in a parable, 5 “A sower went out to sow his seed. And as he sowed, some fell along the path and was trampled underfoot, and the birds of the air devoured it. 6 And some fell on the rock, and as it grew up, it withered away, because it had no moisture. 7 And some fell among thorns, and the thorns grew up with it and choked it. 8 And some fell into good soil and grew and yielded a hundredfold.” As he said these things, he called out, “He who has ears to hear, let him hear.” 9 And when his disciples asked him what this parable meant, 10 he said, “To you it has been given to know the secrets of the kingdom of God, but for others they are in parables, so that ‘seeing they may not see, and hearing they may not understand.’ 11 Now the parable is this: The seed is the word of God. 12 The ones along the path are those who have heard; then the devil comes and takes away the word from their hearts, so that they may not believe and be saved. 13 And the ones on the rock are those who, when they hear the word, receive it with joy. But these have no root; they believe for a while, and in time of testing fall away. 14 And as for what fell among the thorns, they are those who hear, but as they go on their way they are choked by the cares and riches and pleasures of life, and their fruit does not mature. 15 As for that in the good soil, they are those who, hearing the word, hold it fast in an honest and good heart, and bear fruit with patience. 16 “No one after lighting a lamp covers it with a jar or puts it under a bed, but puts it on a stand, so that those who enter may see the light. 17 For nothing is hidden that will not be made manifest, nor is anything secret that will not be known and come to light. 18 Take care then how you hear, for to the one who has, more will be given, and from the one who has not, even what he thinks that he has will be taken away.” 19 Then his mother and his brothers came to him, but they could not reach him because of the crowd. 20 And he was told, “Your mother and your brothers are standing outside, desiring to see you.” 21 But he answered them, “My mother and my brothers are those who hear the word of God and do it.” The lesson is read, the people sitting 23 And as they were shouting and throwing off their cloaks and flinging dust into the air, 24 the tribune ordered him to be brought into the barracks, saying that he should be examined by flogging, to find out why they were shouting against him like this. 25 But when they had stretched him out for the whips, Paul said to the centurion who was standing by, “Is it lawful for you to flog a man who is a Roman citizen and uncondemned?” 26 When the centurion heard this, he went to the tribune and said to him, “What are you about to do? For this man is a Roman citizen.” 27 So the tribune came and said to him, “Tell me, are you a Roman citizen?” And he said, “Yes.” 28 The tribune answered, “I bought this citizenship for a large sum.” Paul said, “But I am a citizen by birth.” 29 So those who were about to examine him withdrew from him immediately, and the tribune also was afraid, for he realized that Paul was a Roman citizen and that he had bound him. 30 But on the next day, desiring to know the real reason why he was being accused by the Jews, he unbound him and commanded the chief priests and all the council to meet, and he brought Paul down and set him before them. And looking intently at the council, Paul said, “Brothers, I have lived my life before God in all good conscience up to this day.”2 And the high priest Ananias commanded those who stood by him to strike him on the mouth. 3 Then Paul said to him, “God is going to strike you, you whitewashed wall! Are you sitting to judge me according to the law, and yet contrary to the law you order me to be struck?” 4 Those who stood by said, “Would you revile God's high priest?” 5 And Paul said, “I did not know, brothers, that he was the high priest, for it is written, ‘You shall not speak evil of a ruler of your people.’” 6 Now when Paul perceived that one part were Sadducees and the other Pharisees, he cried out in the council, “Brothers, I am a Pharisee, a son of Pharisees. It is with respect to the hope and the resurrection of the dead that I am on trial.” 7 And when he had said this, a dissension arose between the Pharisees and the Sadducees, and the assembly was divided. 8 For the Sadducees say that there is no resurrection, nor angel, nor spirit, but the Pharisees acknowledge them all. 9 Then a great clamor arose, and some of the scribes of the Pharisees' party stood up and contended sharply, “We find nothing wrong in this man. What if a spirit or an angel spoke to him?” 10 And when the dissension became violent, the tribune, afraid that Paul would be torn to pieces by them, commanded the soldiers to go down and take him away from among them by force and bring him into the barracks. 11 The following night the Lord stood by him and said, “Take courage, for as you have testified to the facts about me in Jerusalem, so you must testify also in Rome.” The lesson is read, the people sitting 6 But now that Timothy has come to us from you, and has brought us the good news of your faith and love and reported that you always remember us kindly and long to see us, as we long to see you— 7 for this reason, brothers, in all our distress and affliction we have been comforted about you through your faith. 8 For now we live, if you are standing fast in the Lord. 9 For what thanksgiving can we return to God for you, for all the joy that we feel for your sake before our God, 10 as we pray most earnestly night and day that we may see you face to face and supply what is lacking in your faith? 11 Now may our God and Father himself, and our Lord Jesus, direct our way to you, 12 and may the Lord make you increase and abound in love for one another and for all, as we do for you, 13 so that he may establish your hearts blameless in holiness before our God and Father, at the coming of our Lord Jesus with all his saints. The following Canticle is sung or said, all standing Lord, now let your servant depart in peace,* according to your word. For the powers of the heavens will be shaken. 27 And then they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory. 28 Now when these things begin to take place, straighten up and raise your heads, because your redemption is drawing near.” 29 And he told them a parable: “Look at the fig tree, and all the trees. 30 As soon as they come out in leaf, you see for yourselves and know that the summer is already near. 31 So also, when you see these things taking place, you know that the kingdom of God is near. 32 Truly, I say to you, this generation will not pass away until all has taken place. 33 Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away. Officiant and People together, all standing I believe in God, the Father almighty,
creator of heaven and earth.
I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord.
He was conceived by the Holy Spirit
and born of the Virgin Mary.
He suffered under Pontius Pilate,

He descended to the dead.
On the third day he rose again.
He ascended into heaven,

He will come again to judge the living and the dead.

By your agony and bloody sweat; by your Cross and passion; by your precious death and burial, Good Lord, deliver us. By your glorious resurrection and ascension; by the sending of the Holy Spirit; by your heavenly intercession; and by your coming again in power and great glory, Good Lord, deliver us. In all times of tribulation; in all times of prosperity; in the hour of death, and in the day of judgment, Good Lord, deliver us. Grant us your peace. O Christ, hear us. O Christ, hear us.
Lord, have mercy upon us. Officiant and People Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.
Lord, have mercy. Officiant and People Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your Name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. And forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial, and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and for ever. Amen. O Lord, arise and help us;
And deliver us for your Name’s sake. O God, we have heard with our ears, and our forebears have declared to us, the noble works that you did in their days, and in the time before them. O Lord, arise and help us; And deliver us for your Name’s sake. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. O Lord, arise and help us; And deliver us for your Name’s sake. From our enemies defend us, O Christ; Graciously behold our afflictions. With pity behold the sorrows of our hearts; Mercifully forgive the sins of your people. With favor hear our prayers; O Son of David, have mercy upon us. Be pleased to hear us, O Christ; Graciously hear us, O Christ; graciously hear us, O Lord Christ. The Officiant prays Let us pray. Look mercifully, O Father, on our infirmities; and, for the glory of your Name, rescue us from all those evils we now endure; and grant that in all our troubles we may put our whole trust and confidence in your mercy, serving you in holiness and purity of life, to your honor and glory; through our only Mediator and Advocate, Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. O God, you manifest in your servants the signs of your presence: Send forth upon us the Spirit of love, that in companionship with one another your abounding grace may increase among us; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. O Almighty God, who in your wrath sent a plague upon your own people in the wilderness for their obstinate rebellion against Moses and Aaron, and also in the time of King David, sent a plague of pestilence which killed seventy thousand, but remembering your mercy spared the rest: have pity upon us miserable sinners, who now are visited with great sickness and mortality; and in the same way that you then accepted an atonement and commanded the destroying Angel to cease from punishing: so it may now please you to withdraw from us this plague and grievous sickness, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Almighty God, by your Word you laid the foundations of the earth, set the bounds of the sea, and still the wind and waves. Surround us with your grace and peace, and preserve us through this plague. By your Spirit, lift up those who have fallen, strengthen those who work to rescue or rebuild, and fill us with the hope of your new creation; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. The Officiant may invite the People to offer intercessions and thanksgivings. A hymn or anthem may be sung. Officiant and People Almighty God, Father of all mercies, we your unworthy servants give you humble thanks for all your goodness and loving-kindness to us and to all whom you have made. We bless you for our creation, preservation, and all the blessings of this life; but above all for your immeasurable love in the redemption of the world by our Lord Jesus Christ; for the means of grace, and for the hope of glory. And, we pray, give us such an awareness of your mercies, that with truly thankful hearts we may show forth your praise, not only with our lips, but in our lives, by giving up our selves to your service, and by walking before you in holiness and righteousness all our days; Through Jesus Christ our Lord, to whom, with you and the Holy Spirit, be honor and glory throughout all ages. Amen. Almighty God, you have given us grace at this time, with one accord to make our common supplications to you; and you have promised through your well-beloved Son that when two or three are gathered together in his Name you will grant their requests: Fulfill now, O Lord, our desires and petitions as may be best for us; granting us in this world knowledge of your truth, and in the age to come life everlasting. Amen. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit, be with us all evermore. Amen. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit, be with us all evermore. Amen.The Psalm Appointed

Isaiah 41
Reader
A reading from the Prophet Isaiah, beginning with the forty-first chapter, the first verse
Fear Not, for I Am with You
let the peoples renew their strength;
let them approach, then let them speak;
let us together draw near for judgment.
whom victory meets at every step?
He gives up nations before him,
so that he tramples kings underfoot;
he makes them like dust with his sword,
like driven stubble with his bow.
3 He pursues them and passes on safely,
by paths his feet have not trod.
4 Who has performed and done this,
calling the generations from the beginning?
I, the Lord, the first,
and with the last; I am he.
the ends of the earth tremble;
they have drawn near and come.
6 Everyone helps his neighbor
and says to his brother, “Be strong!”
7 The craftsman strengthens the goldsmith,
and he who smooths with the hammer him who strikes the anvil,
saying of the soldering, “It is good”;
and they strengthen it with nails so that it cannot be moved.
Jacob, whom I have chosen,
the offspring of Abraham, my friend;
9 you whom I took from the ends of the earth,
and called from its farthest corners,
saying to you, “You are my servant,
I have chosen you and not cast you off”;
10 fear not, for I am with you;
be not dismayed, for I am your God;
I will strengthen you, I will help you,
I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.
shall be put to shame and confounded;
those who strive against you
shall be as nothing and shall perish.
12 You shall seek those who contend with you,
but you shall not find them;
those who war against you
shall be as nothing at all.
13 For I, the Lord your God,
hold your right hand;
it is I who say to you, “Fear not,
I am the one who helps you.”
you men of Israel!
I am the one who helps you, declares the Lord;
your Redeemer is the Holy One of Israel.
15 Behold, I make of you a threshing sledge,
new, sharp, and having teeth;
you shall thresh the mountains and crush them,
and you shall make the hills like chaff;
16 you shall winnow them, and the wind shall carry them away,
and the tempest shall scatter them.
And you shall rejoice in the Lord;
in the Holy One of Israel you shall glory.
and there is none,
and their tongue is parched with thirst,
I the Lord will answer them;
I the God of Israel will not forsake them.
18 I will open rivers on the bare heights,
and fountains in the midst of the valleys.
I will make the wilderness a pool of water,
and the dry land springs of water.
19 I will put in the wilderness the cedar,
the acacia, the myrtle, and the olive.
I will set in the desert the cypress,
the plane and the pine together,
20 that they may see and know,
may consider and understand together,
that the hand of the Lord has done this,
the Holy One of Israel has created it.The Futility of Idols
bring your proofs, says the King of Jacob.
22 Let them bring them, and tell us
what is to happen.
Tell us the former things, what they are,
that we may consider them,
that we may know their outcome;
or declare to us the things to come.
23 Tell us what is to come hereafter,
that we may know that you are gods;
do good, or do harm,
that we may be dismayed and terrified.
24 Behold, you are nothing,
and your work is less than nothing;
an abomination is he who chooses you.
from the rising of the sun, and he shall call upon my name;
he shall trample on rulers as on mortar,
as the potter treads clay.
26 Who declared it from the beginning, that we might know,
and beforehand, that we might say, “He is right”?
There was none who declared it, none who proclaimed,
none who heard your words.
27 I was the first to say to Zion, “Behold, here they are!”
and I give to Jerusalem a herald of good news.
28 But when I look, there is no one;
among these there is no counselor
who, when I ask, gives an answer.
29 Behold, they are all a delusion;
their works are nothing;
their metal images are empty wind.

Sirach 9
Reader
A reading from Ecclesiasticus, the Wisdom of Jesus Son of Sirach , beginning with the ninth chapter, the first verse
Advice Concerning Women
and do not teach her an evil lesson to your own hurt.
2 Do not give yourself to a woman
so that she gains mastery over your strength.
3 Do not go to meet a loose woman,
lest you fall into her snares.
4 Do not associate with a woman singer,
lest you be caught in her intrigues.
5 Do not look intently at a virgin,
lest you stumble and incur penalties for her.
6 Do not give yourself to harlots
lest you lose your inheritance.
7 Do not look around in the streets of a city,
nor wander about in its deserted sections.
8 Turn away your eyes from a shapely woman,
and do not look intently at beauty belonging to another;
many have been misled by a woman’s beauty,
and by it passion is kindled like a fire.
9 Never dine with another man’s wife,
nor revel with her at wine;
lest your heart turn aside to her,
and in blood you be plunged into destruction.Choice of Friends
for a new one does not compare with him.
A new friend is like new wine;
when it has aged you will drink it with pleasure.
for you do not know what his end will be.
12 Do not delight in what pleases the ungodly;
remember that they will not be held guiltless as long as they live.
and you will not be worried by the fear of death.
But if you approach him, make no misstep,
lest he rob you of your life.
Know that you are walking in the midst of snares,
and that you are going about on the city battlements.
and consult with the wise.
15 Let your conversation be with men of understanding,
and let all your discussion be about the law of the Most High.
16 Let righteous men be your dinner companions,
and let your glorying be in the fear of the Lord.Concerning Rulers
so a people’s leader is proved wise by his words.
18 A babbler is feared in his city,
and the man who is reckless in speech will be hated.
